Envoy Annan warns against more force in Syria

“I hope no one is thinking very seriously of using force in this situation. I believe any further militarisation will make the situation worse,” ...“We have to be careful that we don’t introduce a medicine that is worse than the disease. We don’t have to go very far in the region to find an example of what I am talking about,”

The proposal being discussed as an alternative to the approach Kofi Annan is taking is to arm the opposition. I am of the option that this could plunge Syria into a full blown civil war without prospects for a resolution in the foreseeable future. Looking back at Lebanon is an example of how this may unfold if the opposition is armed and a bloody civil war ignites. The region is also polarised along a similar line as it was when Lebanon was in crisis. I am therefore of the option that, despite International pessimism “We have to be careful that we don’t introduce a medicine that is worse than the disease” and give Kofi Annan and his team some time!
